About Lumi

Made by two parents, at their own kids' bedtimes

We're not a studio with a mission statement on the wall. We're a couple in Calgary who got tired of what bedtime apps had become, and decided to build the one we actually wanted.

Meet Lumi

A small firefly who comes by at bedtime

Lumi is a firefly-spirit — a soft golden light with the patience of someone who has all night. She appears each evening to share one story, rooted in the wisdom traditions that have helped people make sense of the world for centuries.

She’s curious, quiet, and kind. She stays through the whole tale, glowing beside your child, and dims softly as they drift off — a little light at the start of the night, and a gentle one to end it. No noise, no rush. Just Lumi, a story, and sleep.

A parent and child reading a picture book on the floor together

Lumi started where most good things in our house start — at the end of a long day, with two kids who didn’t want the day to end. We’d reach for an app, and reach for another, and every one of them felt like the same trap: autoplay, bright colors built to keep little eyes open, a cartoon that rolled into the next cartoon, and somewhere in there, ads or data collection aimed squarely at our children.

None of it helped anyone fall asleep. None of it was anything we’d have chosen if someone had simply asked us, “what do you want bedtime to feel like?”

So we made the thing we wanted. One calm story a night. Drawn from traditions that have helped people make sense of the world for centuries. Beautifully read, then over — the screen going dark with the room.

The couple behind it

A pipefitter and a writer, raising two kids

Chris is a pipefitter by trade and the author of Birth of an Idea. He spends his rotations thinking about how a good story actually lands — what makes one worth carrying into sleep, and what makes another just noise.

His partner is a writer with her first book finished, and a long-running focus on raising grounded, thoughtful kids. Between the two of them, Lumi gets its two halves: the craft of the story, and the care for the child hearing it.

We publish under Om Society Press, our small family imprint. No investors. No growth team. No quarterly targets pushing us to keep your kid on the screen longer. The only thing we’re optimizing for is a good ending to the day.

Read it in your own voice

Sometimes the most powerful version of a story is your voice — the pauses, the questions, the closeness. That’s why every Lumi story can be read aloud by you, too.

Every story comes three ways: Listen to the narration, Read Together with the words on screen, or Read Alone — just the text, in large, calm type, for the nights you want to do the reading yourself.

What we promise

The company we’re trying to build

Calm over engagement

We will never add autoplay, streaks, or anything designed to keep your child watching. The story ends and so does the screen.

Depth over noise

Real stories from real traditions, adapted with care. We trust kids with meaning, and we never staple a moral to the end.

Your child is not the product

No ads, ever. No behavioral tracking of children. We make money one honest way: a subscription you can cancel anytime.
